Creating a Dynamic Elevator Speech

In this increasingly busy world, freelance editors can benefit from a clear, correct, and concise method of promoting themselves to potential clients.

Our two meeting facilitators, Christian and Rebecca, created a high-­energy atmosphere by having attending members jump right in and start role­playing to create the perfect 30 second elevator speech.

In a process akin to speed­-dating, members rotated partners every few minutes, while Christian and Rebecca coached us. One partner would give “the speech,” while the other critiqued it. Our 90 minutes flew by, and all members felt they were taking away some new and solid techniques for getting their message out quickly.

A brief overview of Christian’s and Rebecca’s process of creating the perfect elevator speech:

  • Identify your target market (who do you want to work with?)

  • Identify the target market’s problem or challenge

  • Explain the ultimate outcome your target market would achieve by working with you

Another element to the elevator speech, if you have time, is the success story. Develop a quick story you can relate about an actual experience with a client. Use the same elements from the elevator speech to craft your message.
