About the Conference
Held biennially since 2007, Red Pencil is one of the top editing conferences in the country and the largest specifically for editors on the West Coast, with over 200 attendees from the Pacific Northwest, California, Canada, and beyond. A learning and networking forum for members of the Northwest Editors Guild, colleagues, and friends in the editing community, this one-day conference hosts sessions that speak to both freelancers and in-house editors, covering a variety of professional topics from technical editing to comic books and more.
Conference Theme: Seasons of an Editing Career
Providing editors with opportunities to grow and succeed throughout their work lives is a key objective of the Guild, and this goal is embodied in the 2023 conference theme, Seasons of an Editing Career. This year, Red Pencil will focus on providing professional development opportunities that support every phase of an editorial career—from breaking into the field, to expanding a client base, to diversifying or specializing, to exploring paths to retirement.

Covid-19 Health and Safety Measures
The health and safety of everyone present at in-person conference events is our top priority. If you are attending in-person, find recommended health and safety measures to take before and during the conference on our Covid-19 Policy page.

Accessibility
The Northwest Editors Guild is committed to hosting a conference that is welcoming and enjoyable for every attendee. If you have an accessibility question, concern, or request, please reach out to conference@edsguild.org.
While attending the conference, if you have any questions or requests related to accessibility, please see the volunteers at the registration table or at the Guild information table. The Lynnwood Event Center provides permanent access accommodations under the guidance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you need temporary auxiliary aids or a wheelchair, those can be acquired at the front desk, located on the upper level.
Presentations will be amplified, and some front-of-room seating will be reserved for people who are hard of hearing or have low vision. These seats will be designated by “Reserved: Accessible Seating” signs. Live-streamed sessions will include live captioning, which means AI-generated captions that are not edited for accuracy. Recorded sessions will be captioned with edited captions.
Name Tag Stickers
“No photos” stickers on name tags identify attendees who do not want to be photographed. Back-of-head shots in groups are fine, but otherwise please respect their request.
We will provide colored stickers so that everyone can indicate their comfort level with physical contact: red means no contact, please; yellow signals elbow contact or handshakes are okay; and green means hugs are welcome. Please notice and respect attendees’ choices.
Create Access
To help make the conference inclusive and enjoyable for all attendees, we request that you:
Move mindfully. Be aware of the people around you.
Use middle seats and make a new friend whenever you can. Leave the front and side seats open for late arrivals and those needing easily accessible seating.
Take the space you need to fully participate. Ask for what you need.
Avoid making assumptions about others’ needs, visible or invisible. Instead, ask what you can do to make someone’s day better.
